Bordeaux, Tuscany and Dealu Mare – Three Terroirs, Three Distinct Personalities
Why are they all famous, yet so different?
1. One Parallel, Three Different Climates
All three regions lie along the 45th parallel, often called the golden circle of world viticulture. But the similarities end there:
Bordeaux has a humid, oceanic climate.
Tuscany enjoys a warm, dry Mediterranean climate.
Dealu Mare benefits from a warm continental climate, with long summers and mild autumns.
Grapes in Dealu Mare receive the most sunlight and experience significant day–night temperature swings, resulting in wines that are surprisingly vibrant and expressive.
2. Dealu Mare has the Longest Grape-Ripening Season
Bordeaux: 185–200 days
Toscana: 195–205 days
Dealu Mare: up to 210–220 days
More time spent on the vine means that grapes from Dealu Mare ripen fully, developing greater aroma, intensity, and depth.
3. Soil as a signature
Bordeaux: gravel, clay, and sand — excellent drainage and deep root penetration → elegant, structured wines with linear finesse.
Tuscany: marl and calcareous clays, layered with galestro and alberese — hard, fractured soils with complex minerality → supple, vibrant wines.
Dealu Mare: red oxidic soils rich in iron, compact clays, and limestone inserts — a sunny yet continental mix → intense, rich, velvety wines.
Dealu Mare produces wines that are both generous and sun-drenched, with dense velvety textures and subtle freshness.
4.Three Philosophies: Blend, Tradition, Contrast
Bordeaux: famed for excellently controlled blends (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot).
Tuscany: pure tradition (Sangiovese, Vernaccia), complemented by the boldness of Super Tuscan varieties.
Dealu Mare: a fascinating mix of Romanian varieties (Fetească Neagră) and international grapes, with stylistic differences between wineries.
On a relatively small surface area, Dealu Mare boasts the greatest viticultural diversity.
5.Reputation, Culture and Innovative Potential
Bordeaux = a global institution.
Tuscany = a cultural and romantic icon.
Dealu Mare = a region with innovative potential, unburdened by centuries of rigid tradition.
If Bordeaux and Tuscany are well-charted territories for connoisseurs, Dealu Mare is the “next frontier” for enthusiasts and wine experts seeking something new, authentic, and highly promising.
